Shane Ross: Old comrades and quangoists drink up on taxpayer's tab
Enterprise Ireland, the semi-state agency entrusted with boosting Irish business overseas, splashed out €10,000 of taxpayers' money on a party for its former staff just before Christmas.
The troubled quango hosted a bash for a hundred retired employees plus their partners, providing generous amounts of wine, a choice of menu, followed by mince pies and Christmas cake. A live band played music for the semi-state revellers who were not asked to contribute a cent towards their reunion. News of the embattled quango's generosity to its departed staff comes hot on the heels of the shock cancellation of its flagship trade trip to China due to have taken place last week.
According to a spokesman the mission was "postponed" because there were diary problems between the Taoiseach and the Chinese prime minister but the event had been advertised on the agency's website for several months.
