Honest words remind us of home-grown talent

Remember Ireland's solution to its banking board problem? We went overseas. We hunted the banking highways and byways of the globe to decorate Irish boards.

In particular, we scoured Britain's banking elite to land big fish without baggage.

And what fools of ourselves we made. We caught a couple of proper clowns in the net. Bank of Ireland picked up Lloyds-TSB reject Archie Kane to chair its honourable 'Court'. AIB gave HSBC's David Hodgkinson the opportunity to inject some of that noble HSBC culture into our largest bank.
