Politics must not ground IAG's bid for Aer Lingus
Just when we thought Pat Rabbitte had brought some common sense to the Aer Lingus debate, comes the revelation in this newspaper today that Labour deputies are going to move a motion at their party conference this weekend ruling out any sale of the State's 25pc stake in the airline.
Brilliant. That's just what Aer Lingus needs. Its future (and possibly its future survival) being determined in the calm, unemotional and considered environment of a party conference - yes, that was sarcasm.
Rabbitte showed considerable cojones in backing the IAG bid. His thoughtful contribution - taken, one imagines, after much agonising - raised hopes that, for once, smart business sense, and what was actually best for the airline would win out over political posturing.
