A few years back after an unsuccessful season Dick Clerkin wrote an excellent column about Monaghan needing to get more ruthless.

The word ‘cynical’ was used. Whether at his prompting or the manager’s or the collective, Monaghan got cuter, more physical and less attractive.

Within two years they won an Ulster title and became contenders. Turns out an attitude change can have fairly immediate returns.
