Here's hoping immortal 'Cake' has taste for more after heartbreaking loss
As ever, Shane Curran was philosophical when staring defeat in the face on Sunday afternoon. "I always said that the game gives you up. Some day it will. I don't know whether today is that day or not," said the 42-year-old in the aftermath of St Brigid's extra-time loss to Castlebar Mitchels.
While it's impossible to believe the game of Gaelic football will ever give up on Curran (right), if 'Cake' does decide to hang up his boots and stretchy pants once and for all this winter, he can rest assured his last minutes in goal will have only added to his legend.
Eleven minutes into extra-time, with the game tied and Brigid's down to 13 men, Curran seemed possessed by the spirit of his younger self. He took a hand pass from one of his defenders and ran the ball out of his own goal. He covered about 25 yards before being clattered by a Castlebar player and falling in a heap.
