Guardiola's 'Sliding Doors' Moment
If you're obsessed with sport's 'sliding doors' moments -- those seemingly minor events that could have disrupted the very fabric of sport history -- I have an unbelievable nugget of miscellany for you.
In Guillem Balague's tome 'Pep Guardiola -- Another Way Of Winning', the author states that in 2003, while the former Barca midfielder foundered at Brescia, the then Wigan manager Paul Jewell tracked down Guardiola's number to enquire whether he would have any interest in moving north.
"I called and left a message, 'Hello, Pep, it's Paul here," Jewell tells Balague. Jewell was so confident of his import in world football that he omitted his surname.
