Mary Kenny: 'Having it all' has become 'doing it all' for the golden years brigade

You see all these adverts for wonderful cruises and exotic, far-flung holidays for golden couples in their fifties and sixties who are "empty nesters" – their children grown and flown – and thus are freed from home ties for such delights as "second honeymoons".

Doubtless this demographic exists but there is also another, growing group in a similar cohort – the "sandwich generation" of men and women who are caring for their own elderly parents, and taking responsibility for their young adult offspring simultaneously.

This phenomenon has mushroomed since the recession, as adult kids come home to mammy and daddy for reasons of housing, economics and sometimes failed relationships, just when ma and pa are aware that their own parents are growing ever frailer.
