With sponsorship of sport still in the game, alcohol bill is just a half-measure
There's a Cheshire cat grin radiating out from the drinks industry over its success in watering down measures to control alcohol abuse. This is a win for lobbyists - never underestimate the power of the shekel.
Various initiatives envisaged by the Government make sense. Outlawing below-cost selling, restrictions on outdoor and cinema advertising, health warnings and calorie counts on labels, banning targeting of children - all worthwhile. Indeed, overdue.
But the alcohol giants are smirking because their lobbyists scored a clincher. Sports sponsorship is not being vetoed, despite medical experts urging it. Drinks companies can continue to nab 'em young. Three cheers for profit maximisation.
