Homelessness isn't a lifestyle choice – it's up to us to help people off streets
By day, a tatty sleeping bag or blanket and a few sheets of cardboard in a doorway stake someone's claim to the spot. By night, a body is huddled between those flimsy coverings.
Life on the street is a tough existence. A hand-to-mouth existence. A dangerous existence. Hard to believe anybody would choose it – and scarcely no one does.
Yet it's the only option some people have. People exactly like you or me, except they may have experienced a run of bad luck, or made some unfortunate choices, or been squeezed by circumstances.
