Kevin Myers: We're creating a racial rod for our own back by failing to act now on integration in schools

I know that some four long weeks have elapsed since the Dail resumed after the TDs' month-long break for Christmas, so the poor dears are probably exhausted, fixing planning permissions and so on. Oops, sorry, not planning permissions: we no longer have any building projects to seek permission for. Indeed, we barely have an economy these days.

Either way, our TDs are clearly pooped, which is no doubt the reason why five of the seven Fianna Fail representatives who should have attended a recent meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Science were absent.

One of the absentees was Beverley ex-Cooper-Flynn, the standard bearer for all that is decent and noble in Co Mayo. Possibly she was encouraging someone to invest in a tax-efficient investment scheme somewhere. Possibly she was cleaning one of her father's many houses. Who can say?
