Kevin Myers: So many questions, so little time . . . or common sense
My thanks to Nicola Hudson of AA Roadwatch, who sent me this email warning: "The sun has been low in the sky at dawn and dusk this week."
Presumably, this is quite a change from normal, when the sun is already high in the sky as it rises, and it rather thoughtfully sets well above the horizon also.
Of course, what Nicola really meant to say was as follows: at this time of year, the sun is low and deadly for much of the day, and especially dangerous when the road is wet. But she might also have added that autumn 2010 actually finished when the first frost fell, as it did on Wednesday: thenceforth, the leaves will rapidly follow, and soon the trees will be bare, and we shall have reverted once more to the six months of winter, the season that is our natural condition.
