Kevin Myers: National self-interest is our only friend -- and hope
Brian Lenihan is a true patriot, serving his country. But we must not shrink from criticising him. And if he is persistently in error, then we must get rid of him
The crisis has been under way now for nearly two years. It is as if BP had been prospecting through our seabed and had bored a hole in our finances that exceeds in depth and unpluggability anything in the history of any western democracy. The Irish taxpayer is being held accountable for borrowings which that poor dupe never knew were taking place. These borrowings were supervised by a government inspectorate which almost alone remains immune to the consequences of its own deplorable failings.
Indeed, far from being answerable, its senior members seem able to claim early retirement almost at will, with topped-up pensions and tax-free fare-thee-wells.
