Pride: Pride of prelates leads to a great fall


When it comes to the seven deadly sins that destroyed the pillars of the first Republic, one would think lust might be the cancer that chopped up a previously venerated church and reduced it to its current peripheral state.

But the scandalous misdemeanours of our clerics and bishops were only the symptom of a far deeper malaise; for the deadly sin which really destroyed the self-styled princes of the church was pride.

Of course the fleshy sins of so many rotten priests did not help, but it was that Pride, built over seven decades of deference to the bishops, which created the fatal fissure that destroyed the edifice.
