John Drennan: Smug Shinners may give rivals a punishment beating

It would be romantic, in a Wild West kind of way, if Martin McGuinness won the race for the Presidency, writes John Drennan

If there was a degree in smugness, from the University of Smug, Sinn Fein would have, in the days leading up to the selection of Martin McGuinness, graduated with honours.

They may have tried to throw every variety of exotica from Mickey Harte to Michelle Gildernew in front of the media bloodhounds but the rare spectacle of seeing the SF soldiers smile like a collective of radioactive Buddhas meant it was going to be a case of "My Goodness, it's McGuinness".

In truth the rest of us were a tad relieved by the arrival of 'My Goodness McGuinness', if only for selfish reasons, as a tedious campaign was transformed into a war for the soul of the Republic.
