Portlaoise is a reasonably-sized provincial town but, in spite of its modest scale, if you stroll down its high street there is an astonishing array of what mandarins call small businesses.

We knew from experience that there were 21 pubs. We counted the various small shops in a manner that might have left some fearing the IMF had arrived, and the total of small businesses came to 205.

That's a lot of jobs, a lot of dreams and a lot of worry too for you cannot walk past a small clothes shop without seeing 50 per cent discounts and the new trend for €5, €10 and €15 rails.
