John Drennan: 'Sanctuary' of Dail Bar is shattered by war of words


Brian Cowen may once have famously likened the members' (as distinct to the public) section of the Dail Bar to a "sanctuary'' where TDs could escape from the fractious stresses of the modern world. However, as cuts begin to bite and fragile nerves take flight, even the communitarian ethos of the Dail Bar is coming under pressure.

Last week, the communal peace was breached by an astonishing duo of spats between the normally amicable pairing of Fianna Fail senator Terry Leyden and Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan.

The source of the trouble was the outwardly minor issue of the closure of Boyle Court-house. Initially, this was the catalyst for some critical comments by Mr Leyden in the safe confines of the Seanad. But in the wake of his speech, he subsequently claimed that he had been subjected to "an angry verbal attack" by an "incandescent" Mr Feighan.
