John Drennan: Reform of councils to spark row in Coalition
Any move to cut councillors likely to spark 'fierce' Labour opposition
Tensions between Fine Gael and Labour are poised to escalate over Environment Minister Phil Hogan's declared intention to lead a radical reform of local government.
It is believed that his key proposals include major cuts in or abolition of town councils. There are more than 400 town councillors nationwide.
Labour sources last week told the Sunday Independent that any proposals to reduce or abolish town councils are likely to spark "fierce opposition'' from within Labour and some elements of Fine Gael.
