John Drennan: McDowell adds fuel to row over axing Seanad


The former PD leader Michael McDowell has warned that it would be easier to draft a new Constitution than to abolish the Seanad.

The comments will hearten a unique cross-party alliance of Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour, Sinn Fein and assorted independent senators who have united in revolt against the Government's plans to fast-track a proposed referendum on the abolition of the Seanad.

It had been thought in the aftermath of the defeat of the Government's Parliamentary Inquiries Bill that a proposed series of constitutional referenda would be put on the long finger.
