John Drennan: Enda's power play is on too small a pitch
Seeing off an internal coup is one thing, but Enda Kenny has still to convince the public and beat Fianna Fail, says John Drennan
IT is said that Charlie Haughey finally knew the writing was on the wall when, during one of the final scandals that beset his last years, the great escapologist asked his cabinet if he had their support.
Everything went reasonably well until he came to Pee Flynn, who had once famously promised he would be Mr Haughey's last spear carrier. Pee put on his saddest expression and his most pious accent and engaged in an unctuous simper of, "Ah Jaysus, Boss, maybe you've suffered enough."
It is believed that as Mr Haughey left the cabinet he told one of his closest aides "that's me f****d so".
