John Drennan: David's own Goliath was his lack of due diligence

He carried out his own shield, but Norris is still a man undone by fatal flaws, says John Drennan

The sudden influx of potential candidates into the presidential campaign after the departure of David Norris is starting to bear an unnerving resemblance to the 'old lady who swallowed a fly' and was then forced to consume a variety of other animals in a vain attempt to reverse the initial error.

In our case such is the extent of the political vacuum that Dana, Declan Ganly and Bobby Ballagh (unfortunately) are back whilst there are whisperings about Michael O Muircheartaigh and Miriam O'Callaghan being lusted after (politically we stress!) by Micheal Martin.

If one adds that Victorian-style eccentric Eamon O Cuiv, and some FF MEP with long hair (remind me again -- actually don't) all that's missing from this uniquely rich mix of mostly mice and maggots are Bertie and John Waters, who if he does run is surely poised to replicate those great Eurovision achievements.
