THE arrival of a posse of colourful independents such as Luke 'Ming' Flanagan and Mick Wallace means the Dail chamber is poised to look more like the set of the anarchic British comedy The Young Ones than its usual resemblance to a conference of bank managers.

Leinster House may be one of the last of the great Victorian institutions -- at least when it comes to dress codes.

Punctilious Dail authorities have in the past chased journalists out of the press gallery for a variety of sins, such as not wearing ties, having uncovered arms (in the case of the ladies) and reading the Racing Post.
