It is a year ago almost to the day since Health Minister Leo Varadkar flatly told us that the Government's ambitious health plans would take much longer to achieve. And that the much-reviled HSE would continue.

It is always important to note that a lot of good work goes on in the Irish health services. Every day tens of thousands of people get excellent care from professional and compassionate people.

But its chronic problems also both dispirit and enrage people. The most basic commentary on it is that so few of us trust the public system to deliver the care we need when we need it.
