When our TDs get back from Easter holidays on May 2, it will be just days short of 12 months since this hybrid minority Coalition took office, and began operating as a night watchman.

For several weeks now Dáil Éireann has grappled pretty fractiously and hopelessly with water charges and the problems which beset An Garda Síochána. For the past 20 days its work has spanned a national bus strike which caused traffic and transport chaos beyond the pale.

It has not given cause for encouragement.
