John Downing: Salary top-ups a kick in the teeth to volunteers and their Trojan work
OF ALL the dispiriting stories from our struggling health services – this one may yet prove to be the most disappointing of all.
This is a story of the 44 voluntary hospitals and health agencies which have often commanded considerable public goodwill. They have frequently been seen as delivering quality care in areas where the public system seemed lacking.
From late last week onwards, in this newspaper and elsewhere, some details have been emerging which changed this picture. First off, let's never forget the fact that these 44 institutions share €1.5bn in taxpayer funding.
