John Downing: Gilmore's brave face under strain as grassroots wither
'FOR many people on the left, it has traditionally been the party one would never dream of joining, the party one is thinking of leaving or the party that one has just left."
It is almost 30 years since John Horgan, sometime Labour TD, Senator and MEP, wrote those words in his book 'Labour: The Price of Power'. But they seem pretty apt today as, seven months before the local council elections, Labour has lost its third councillor in as many days, making a total of 25 defections in all from its local authority ranks.
It is becoming increasingly hard for the Labour people at Leinster House to put a brave face on things.
