SOCIALIST TD Joe Higgins's decision to signal his future retirement from the Dail is an effort to copper-fasten a Dail seat for his party colleague in the upcoming by-election.

The party's expected candidate in Dublin West, Councillor Ruth Coppinger, is seen as the front-runner in the by-election, which is expected to be held with the local and European elections on May 23.

That by-election arises from the resignation of Independent TD Patrick Nulty, and is expected to coincide with another in Longford-Westmeath caused by the death of Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden.
