History suggests SF row has put Kenny on borrowed time

It was always going to come to this - the only question was how we would get here.

Political leaders rarely, if ever, get to gather themselves with dignity and bid the world adieu. Departures and ends of career are more often tinged with acrimony and bitterness.

Enda Kenny was actually a TD with four years' experience when he saw Jack Lynch, in December 1979, pushed into bringing forward his plans to stand down as Fianna Fáil leader and taoiseach.
