Long before it started it was billed as "let's open old wounds - just in time for the next election". The apparent government foot-dragging in getting the parliamentary banking inquiry up and running played to the conspiracists' machinations.

A final report dropping just before the General Election would remind everyone that "it was Fianna Fáil what done it" and stymie any recovery hopes of Micheál Martin & Co.

The infamous Dáil statements by the Taoiseach on June 25, 2013, added to this view. Mr Kenny responded to a challenge from Mr Martin in a debate, sparked by the Irish Independent's publication of the 'Anglo Tapes', which gave a revealing insight into the culture of Anglo Irish Bank.
