FG leadership race will be Leo's to lose - but don't write Simon off yet

It ended in a rush and before I knew it I was sorting through the extraordinary detritus one can accumulate in an office over three and a half years. While I was getting on with packing up and throwing out, one of the kinder civil servants I had dealt with popped his head round the door to encourage and commiserate.

"Did you notice how the officials had pulled back over the past few months and disengaged when it became clear that this government could not last?" he asked conversationally.

As 42 months working in the press service at Government Buildings drew to an abrupt halt, I had very much noticed just that over the preceding weeks.
