Enda or Micheál might have some plum jobs to give away - but it's all still a big 'if'

The good news for ambitious backbenchers in both bigger parties is that there could be far more Cabinet seats available before long. The bad news, of course, is that these may not be the most reliable jobs in town.

We remain in the 'land of the big if' but Enda Kenny could have 11 senior government jobs to give away in a Fine Gael-led minority government. Should things fall the other way, Micheál Martin would probably have 10 cabinet seats to confer on his party TDs.

If you add in junior ministries and other goodies, those left on party backbenches could feel very excluded indeed. That of itself could be a source of more trouble. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here. We have an elegant sufficiency of problems as things stand.
