Dullest campaign has killed voter interest in deciding the Seanad's fate

"He is going around the country stirring up apathy."

THAT little gem is credited to Willie Whitelaw, a genial old British Tory toff, who was describing Labour prime minister Harold Wilson's non-impact on a lacklustre election campaign in the mid-1970s.

Watching this Seanad referendum campaign go from dull to duller, it has been hard to keep from thieving Whitelaw's pithy paradoxical phrase.
