The old working song 'Pay Me My Money Down', popularised in every generation for almost a century, could well be the theme music for this post-Easter trade union conference season.

Right across the public service the union activists' message is the same: the economic crisis is over, pay out the money.

We want what we had restored - and we also want a bit with it.
