Beware of geeks bearing gifts as Budget day looms
It's time to brace yourself for the politics of the cattle mart. Farmers are paying too much for store cattle and weanlings in order to secure their livestock. When these animals eventually reach meat factories, they'll return losses because they were overbought, relative to beef market prices.
In a similar vein, voters should prepare themselves for the same dismal economics as our politicians overbid for votes. Party think-ins over the past week resembled a gaggle of gazumpers prepared to pay any price to secure power in the 32nd Dáil.
Ignore the "no daft spending spree" drivel. The elaborate choreography of good news awaits us as ministers plan to love-bomb us into polling booths.
