One of the more amusing furores of recent weeks erupted when British journalist Melanie Phillips was less than complimentary about this country.

She dismissed the concept of Irish nationhood, stating that: "The claim to unite Ireland is tenuous since Ireland itself has a tenuous claim to nationhood, having seceded from Britain as the Irish Free State only in 1922."

The comments were greeted with the predictable fury of the permanently dyspeptic social media community and even the Irish ambassador in London, Daniel Mulhall, was sufficiently moved to issue a statement condemning the article.
