Ian O'Doherty: Travel ban was badly handled - but we can't burn bridges with US

It doesn't really matter that the seven countries affected by US President Donald Trump's new immigration rules - Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Sudan - had previously been earmarked by Barack Obama for special immigration measures.

It doesn't really matter that Mr Trump's predecessor had previously excluded people from America purely on the basis of their nationality - he blocked Iraqi refugees in 2011, citing security concerns.

It doesn't even matter that tightened US immigration is one of the campaign promises which helped transform Mr Trump The TV Star into President Trump.
