Ian O'Doherty: Russell's Brand new joke

Say what you like about Russell Brand, but the boy knows how to keep himself in the news. Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, he made reference to the amount of awful music out there at the moment and opined: "The top of the hit parade would look very different if teenyboppers were exposed to heroin. It would weed a lot of them out. I just don't think Justin Bieber could handle Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd's habit. Then, perhaps, we could be spared their awful music. It's Darwinian. It's the law of natural selection."

Of course, a pedant could point out that Syd Barrett couldn't handle Syd Barrett's habit and he eventually ended up as mad as a fridge, but Brand was obviously joking.

One anti-drug campaigner immediately ran squealing to the press, bleating that: "This is mindless idiocy. It smacks of desperate attention seeking from Brand. You despair of these people -- why would anyone say that?"
