Following orders should never be an optional extra for our gardaí
If there are two arms of the State which are currently held in deep contempt by many Irish people, then this current Government and the Garda certainly fit the bill. A series of scandals, both real and perceived, have dogged the Garda in recent years and the levels of trust between citizens and the people who have sworn to protect us have never been lower.
Similarly, this Coalition has always been loathed by those who didn't vote for them and is now despised by many of those who did, so while the latest feud between the two undoubtedly provides a certain grim satisfaction, it's not exactly healthy for our democracy.
In yesterday's 'Garda Review', Garda Representative Association General Secretary PJ Stone had a pop at our caring, sharing Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, following her comments at the passing out parade for baby cops in Templemore a few weeks ago.
