Cyclists beware -- but Leo is right on helmets
So, here's the deal -- lovely Leo has introduced a host of traffic initiatives which, he hopes, will make the roads safer. As critics have pointed out, the main killer on our roads is simply bad driving by motorists and bad decisions made by cyclists -- drivers, cyclists and pedestrians all need to take responsibility for their own conduct. The cops can clean up a mess, but they can't create one.
The part of his interview that garnered the most attention was his attitude towards cyclists and, as ever, the members of the professional cycling lobby aren't pleased. To which, I hear you plaintively cry, are they ever?
To the righteous indignation of some of our two-wheeled friends, he wants to press ahead with compulsory Hi-Viz garb. But he has also baulked at the idea of making helmets compulsory.
