Changing tune on European superstate
In last week's column, I mentioned the erosion of the nation state in the face of ever increasing EU meddling.
I also pointed out that I am not a nationalist - a phrase which comes with plenty of its own surplus baggage in this country - because nationalism has an unfortunate historical tendency to mutate into ugly them-and-us rhetoric. But either we believe in the concept of the nation state or we don't.
So, on the eve of the French election I surmised that: "Removing the concept of nation states will lead to a rootless, amorphous mess where we're supposed to stand for the EU anthem and salute the EU flag."
