Once a day is gone, it's lost forever – so feed the brain whenever you can

THIS is a kind of golden time – despite Ireland's various tribulations – for many people determined to avail of second-chance adult education.

But the plethora of choice and opportunity has its own hazards. The sheer range of courses on offer, in an array of universities, colleges, and other teaching institutions, can easily lure applicants into making some seriously wrong decisions about what they should study.

The most important question is do you have the grit to stick with a demand-ing course in your middle or later years – and will it do the business by landing a job or promotion if that's your primary motivation?
