Gene Kerrigan: We're Irish, help yourselves to our cash
Another €750m paid out this week -- Anglo Irish is the gift that just keeps on giving, writes Gene Kerrigan
WE had our pockets picked last week -- again -- but I don't think the politicians even noticed. They were having a vigorous debate. A debate about the format of their TV debates. Talks about talks. And that's really important stuff -- well, it's important to them. Meanwhile, Anglo Irish Bank was handing over another three-quarters of a billion to some lucky gamblers.
For the rest of us, Anglo has been a disaster. For the gamblers, Anglo was a winning bet. It's the gift that just keeps on giving. Even now, as the emigrants leave, as the unemployed fear their best years will be spent on the dole, as the young weigh up their dwindling options and the rate of suicide increases -- even now, the gamblers are collecting their winnings.
I was sure there'd be a row about the €750m, but we appear to be punch drunk. Tragic history is repeating itself as farce.
