IT'S raining soup and Enda Kenny is carrying a fork -- again. Eamon Gilmore, meanwhile, has read the political mood better than Kenny and has carved out a niche for the Labour Party.

A year after the Labour leader made the decisive move in forcing Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue to resign, Gilmore has again seized the initiative from Kenny.

Gilmore's defining moment as the politician of the people came last October when he told O'Donoghue he no longer had confidence in him following his handling of revelations of his lavish expenses as a minister.
