Eoghan Harris: The belly rubbers and beard strokers ruined Norris
The Irish people wanted David Norris for President. So who, or what, forced him out of the race? Answer: a posse of pundits, anxious to fulfil their own predictions, whose pressure finally caused Finian McGrath to fold -- and attempt to cover his butt by suggesting the Jewish state of Israel might have been trying to undermine Irish democracy.
Naturally, you can expect some expectoration against my analysis on the various media shows this Sunday morning. The poll corrs in particular are rightly afraid the public blames them for what happened. They deserve the brunt of the blame.
Last Thursday week, David Norris had 15 votes: the 13 already pledged, plus the promised two votes of Senator Fiach MacConghail and Katherine Zappone. But judging by an email from Richard Boyd Barrett last Thursday week, Norris was on the brink of doing a lot better.
