Eoghan Harris: It's time to bring on the bangers or become mash
MY addiction to media meant the highlight of my bank holiday weekend was Peter Murtagh's professional review of the papers on Marion Finucane's Sunday show. If you think this is the minimum for any media-based show, then you must be a normal person and not continually switching channels like me.
Because all the Sunday media shows, whether run by Eamon Dunphy, Sam Smyth or Marion Finucane, share the same bad habit. Instead of a terse tour through all the main stories, they start with a few headlines from their pet papers, then almost invariably become bogged down in some irrelevant side story. But that's not their only crime.
The other offence is keeping the identities of the guests obscure. After a brief introduction, we are left without any guide to the names of the guests. How the hell can we follow the politics of a discussion if we don't know who is speaking?
