Eoghan Harris: It's time for a lot less of the soft lower lip in our politics
FOR the past two weeks I put small politics on the back burner. It seemed more important to pay adequate tributes to Justin Keating and Dick Hill. That leaves me with a big backlog.
Luckily Noel Whelan covered two of my proposed positions in the Irish Times. First he rightly argued that the Government must find a "Mayoral" face to communicate constantly with the public, particularly in times of crisis. I believe that vital job demands a new senior minister.
The best man for the post of Minister for Co-ordination would be Conor Lenihan. He likes journalists, is popular with the public and not afraid to take the hard line. His function would be to force his colleagues to join up their thinking. And cover for any member of the Cabinet who can't make it back from Malta.
