Eoghan Harris: Get the gag taken off Gay Mitchell and let him at it
IRA tribalism is to Ireland what anti-Semitism was to Germany. A chronic poison in the body politic. Martin McGuinness's brazen bid to be President of Ireland offers an opportunity to purge that poison and protect the Good Friday class of '98 from future IRA godfathers.
McGuinness's arrival in the Aras race forces me to review my previous positions. My No 1 vote will now go to whoever robustly rejects the IRA's revision of recent history. Most likely to Gay Mitchell when he gets the gag off.
So far Mitchell has been muted. Some of his PR advisers fear that attacks on McGuinness would cause a "media backlash". By which they really mean an RTE backlash.
