You may recall the TV coverage of the excitement in Rome last year, when the Pope resigned and a new Pope was elected.

RTE in particular discharged its duty with exemplary zeal, setting up camp in that beautiful city, with its lovely weather -- not that they would have been any less determined to honour their public service remit if the headquarters of the Catholic Church happened to be situated in, say, Moldova.

Of course, we had Sky and the BBC and ITV and CNN too, none of them shirking their responsibilities, staying with the story in Rome for as long as it took, which was about a month. And because it lasted so long, there was time for the viewer to reflect on some of the deeper questions, including this one: how many Catholic priests, exactly, are gay?
