Paxman a trivial man in a shrunken universe
Jeremy Paxman, like the political classes, is estranged from what really matters, writes Declan Lynch
'You are a very trivial man!" Jeremy Paxman had said to Russell Brand during their recent interview, Paxman sounding like some barrister out of Dickens.
A week later, and Paxman is introducing a Newsnight feature on the death of Lou Reed. Again adopting that tone of the slightly merry QC, he said of Reed that "much of his music was almost unlistenable to".
Perhaps he allowed such a clumsy construction because he was only talking about what he called "pop music", on which Reed had been influential, though you "couldn't measure his significance in sales".
