Corporate culture keeps the sandwich artist poor
I never knew until last week that there was such a thing as a sandwich artist. But now that it has come to my attention that the Subway chain describes some of its employees as sandwich artists, I thought I should share this information.
Essentially, the sandwich artist makes sandwiches, and takes money from customers, and gives them change, and does a bit of cleaning and so forth, all of which is invaluable work - but is it art?
Certainly the corporation which has defined it as such, is in no doubt that it is art, and that its practitioners are indeed artists. (Though its motives in this regard have been questioned in the light of reports that a branch in the UK was offering 14-month "apprenticeships" for these artists, at a rate of £3.50 an hour.)
