David Robbins: As I watched him dying, life surged on for another day

It is funny the things that go through your mind when you are watching someone die. Although I had seen death before, I had never actually been present for the final moments of someone's life.

Once, when I was growing up, there was no answer to a knock at our aged lodger's door and my mother deputised me to go in and investigate.

I found him half in and half out of his bed, a stricken look on his face. But I did not know how to check for signs of life. Or rather, I did know, but didn't want to.
